Inspiration
Lately I’ve been focusing on how people find their style. Especially with a teen in our house who only wants to wear something that she has seen on others. UGH!!!! And adults who still do a slightly different version of this in their 40’s. With the influencer industry booming we have so much inspiration at our fingertips…this isn’t always the best thing though. It’s only natural that we feel comfortable wearing outfits or looks we have seen before. It’s human nature! But are we surrounding ourselves with the right inspiration? And do we have enough diversity in this inspiration?
With that being said, I’m starting to really ask the question - what are we exposing ourselves to in terms of fashion? Is it the same bubble over and over? There are so many types of bubbles…1. Texas Small Town. 2. Westlake, Highland Park, Alamo Heights, etc. 3. Alaska. 4. Boulder, Colorado. You get the idea. I get it, people like to fit in when it comes to fashion (and so many other things too). They also like to have go to looks that can be put on without thinking. However, if you are someone that wants to grow and up-level your style I want to plant a seed of inspiration with you! Here are a few things to ask yourself:
Who is your inspirational foundation? For me, it’s always been my sweet momma. She is the reason I love fashion, and over the years I have learned so much from her. I’m still learning from her. Maybe your own fashion inspiration came from an aunt, grandmother, best friend, a mentor, celebrity, one of the royals, etc. If you don’t have someone that you can learn from and be inspired by, take some time to find that person
Where to find new inspiration? While I was taught at a young age about style and fashion, it’s something I’m constantly evolving. I love finding new inspiration so I can continue to keep things fresh and creative. This is where I find new inspiration (outside of my “bubble”)
Travel-the absolute BEST!!!!
Stores-vintage, big and small department stores, boutiques, even just window shopping
Old Movies
Friends/Family
How to make inspiration work for you. You can be inspired by a look and not necessarily copy it to a T. You need to make sure it’s a flattering look and pieces for you. You can take pieces of the look and make it work in a way you love. Otherwise, you will look like you are trying too hard to replicate the same styles we see every day.
Personally, the people I think that are so stylish are people that have traveled, aren’t afraid to play around with different looks, and only wear things that are flattering on their figure.
“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”
I LOVE this quote by Dr. Seuss. Your inspiration and style should be as unique as you. Keep that in mind the next time you are getting dressed. It’s much more interesting to wear the unique pieces that your mother passed down from your grandmother. Don’t copy the exact outfit an influencer posted or that you have seen your best friend (and everyone else) wearing. Make it work for you by personalizing it with pieces that inspire YOU.
with LOVE and grace,
Elizabeth
